Polmetro: The New Solution to Combat Pickpocketing on Rome’s Metro Lines
Italy has taken a stand against pickpocketing in subway stations and trains by launching a special police task force called Polmetro. This initiative is set to target crime on metro lines in major cities like Rome, Milan, and Naples, as announced by the interior ministry.
The establishment of Polmetro came after interior minister Matteo Piantedosi held a security meeting with the mayors, prefects, and police commissioners of these cities. The move aims to address the dire pickpocket situation that has plagued subway travelers, particularly in Rome.
Recent incidents of tourists being robbed on subways and clashes between pickpocket gangs have prompted authorities to step up security measures. YouTuber Simone Cicalone also brought attention to the issue with his videos showcasing confrontations with pickpockets on the Rome underground.
Cicalone’s advocacy on social media has garnered support from Roman commuters, pushing for action against rampant pickpocketing. In response, additional police presence was deployed in central Metro A stations in July, with plans to increase security in anticipation of the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.
Municipalities like Rome are determined to make subway travel safer for residents and visitors, highlighting the importance of maintaining security and protecting passengers from theft.
