Welcome to the latest news from the Vatican! Pope Francis has gracefully accepted the resignation of Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, the Archbishop of Boston and the president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. In his place, Bishop Richard Henning of Providence has been appointed as Cardinal O’Malley’s successor.
After more than twenty years of service, Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley has stepped down from his role as the leader of the Archdiocese of Boston, one of the largest in the United States. On the 5th of August, Pope Francis accepted his resignation as he reached the age of 80.
Cardinal O’Malley has been a strong advocate for protecting minors from abuse, a cause that has been close to his heart. He has served as President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors and as a member of the Council of Cardinals (C9).
In his place, Bishop Richard G. Henning has been appointed as the new Archbishop of Boston. Bishop Henning has had a distinguished career, serving in various roles within the Church. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new position.
Archbishop Henning will officially take over his new role on the 31st of October 2024 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. We wish him all the best in his new responsibilities and look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on the community.
