Are you ready to witness the Italian skateboarding dream at Paris 2024? Meet Alessandro Mazzara and Alex Sorgente, the two talented skaters who will represent Italy in the Park competition on Wednesday, August 7th.
With their exceptional qualifications for the French Games, Mazzara ranked 20th globally, while Sorgente secured the 13th spot. Both skaters have earned one of the 22 coveted positions for the pursuit of Olympic medals in the men’s event.
Alex Sorgente, a first-time Olympian, hails from Florida and clinched the World Championship title in park skating back in 2016. On the other hand, Alessandro Mazzara, at just 17 years old, will be making his second Olympic appearance after Tokyo 2020 where he finished in 12th place.
According to the Italian national coach Daniele Galli, “We are just moments away from the games, and we are very excited and proud to participate in this second Olympics for the sport. The journey this year has brought us to the remarkable achievement of qualifying our two athletes for the Paris Games. Now, our focus is on giving our best performance. We are delighted to represent Italy and open up new prospects for the future skate scene in our country.”
The Park competition in Paris will kick off with the women’s event on Tuesday, August 6th, followed by the men’s event on Wednesday, August 7th. The athletes will have 45 seconds in each of their three runs to execute as many tricks as possible within the bowl structure that simulates empty pools.
Various criteria will guide the judges’ evaluation, including the complexity of tricks, precision, diversity, creativity, consistent speed, fluid lines, and the skater’s ability to utilize the entire structure. The final scores will be determined by the best of the three runs.
Alessandro Mazzara shared his excitement saying, “The last qualifying event went great! We are all thrilled; it couldn’t have gone better! I’m also happy for Alex; he has been outstanding throughout the season and earned his spot!”
The breathtaking location of Place de la Concorde in Paris sets the stage for the skatepark nestled between the Champs Elysées and the Jardin des Tuileries. This stunning backdrop emphasizes the street essence of the sport and its seamless integration with cultural heritage, offering a unique experience blending competition adrenaline with the beauty of the French capital.
