Italy secures another medal, and it’s a historic one for tennis.
Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini are in the final for the women’s doubles gold in Paris 2024, after defeating the Czech duo Karolina Muchova-Linda Noskova 6-3 6-2 in the semifinals.
For tennis, this is a historic Olympic medal: the last one was 100 years ago, with Uberto de Morpurgo winning bronze in Paris 1924.
“It’s a dream come true, it’s something incredible. I have always had this ‘itch’ for an Olympic medal and to have achieved it in my last attempt is crazy. I am too happy,” said Sara Errani.
“I am realizing how important the Olympics are: it is at the top of events,” added Paolini, a finalist in 2024 at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
“And now we want the gold,” said the two Italian tennis players.
“An Olympic medal, which we achieve after 100 years thanks to two extraordinary athletes, completes the historic moment that Italian tennis is going through,” said Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation, commenting on Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini’s qualification for the women’s doubles final in Paris 2024 at Roland Garros. “The whole country – he adds – will be cheering for these splendid girls on Sunday, who, I am convinced, will not feel satisfied with this great result already achieved.”
