The World Day Against Trafficking: Leave No Child Behind
Each year on July 30, we come together to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This year’s theme is "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking." Sister Abby Avelino, the International Coordinator of Talitha Kum, emphasizes the urgent need for action to protect the most vulnerable groups, particularly children.
At Talitha Kum, we stand in solidarity with the United Nations campaign on this important day. The focus on children highlights the critical need to shield them from falling victim to trafficking. The story of Karim, an 11-year-old boy from Lebanon, sheds light on the harsh realities faced by many children worldwide. According to the International Labour Organisation, millions of children are subjected to child labour, with a significant number falling prey to trafficking.
In conflict-ridden regions like Ukraine and the Middle East, the risks of abuse are heightened, leaving unaccompanied children particularly vulnerable. The emergence of ‘orphanage trafficking’ and online exploitation further complicates the fight against trafficking. Collaboration with law enforcement agencies and technological advancements are crucial in combating this pervasive issue.
Pope Francis’ call to listen to the cries of those suffering urges us to take collective action. The Talitha Kum network, comprising religious and dedicated individuals, organizes various events and campaigns to raise awareness and prevent trafficking. By engaging in online initiatives like the "Walking in Dignity" app, we strive to mobilize efforts worldwide.
As we navigate the complex landscape of trafficking, Talitha Kum remains steadfast in its mission to educate and empower vulnerable populations. By advocating for systemic change and fostering collaboration, we aim to create a world free from human trafficking. Join us in being ambassadors of hope and standing up for the rights of the most vulnerable among us.
Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for a brighter future for all.
