Empowering Bangladesh’s Youth through the Mirpur Agricultural Workshop and Training School
In a country like Bangladesh, where poverty and unemployment are rampant, a ray of hope shines bright in the form of the Mirpur Agricultural Workshop and Training School (MAWTS). Operated by Caritas Bangladesh, this trust is dedicated to empowering Indigenous and underprivileged youth by providing essential skills training for less than US$10 per month.
Stephan Uttom Rozario, reporting from Dhaka for LiCAS News, shares the inspiring story of MAWTS and its impact on Bangladesh’s youth.
Transforming Communities through Technical Education
MAWTS is not just a technical institute; it is a catalyst for change in communities across Bangladesh. By offering vocational training and technical education, MAWTS is empowering young individuals like Soren from the Santal Indigenous community to break free from the cycle of poverty and limited opportunities.
The Santal Indigenous community, part of the 50 Indigenous groups in Bangladesh, faces significant challenges such as poverty and land grabs. Despite their struggles, individuals like Soren are determined to pursue education and secure decent jobs, with the support of institutions like MAWTS.
Access to Affordable Education
MAWTS offers a range of technical courses at subsidized rates, making quality education accessible to students from impoverished backgrounds. Soren, a student at MAWTS, pays just US$9 per month, including accommodation and food, thanks to a comprehensive scholarship covering 70 percent of her costs.
The institute’s commitment to affordability and quality education is reflected in its impact on students like Soren, who would have otherwise been deprived of such opportunities.
Pioneering Skilled Manpower Development
Established by Caritas Bangladesh, MAWTS has played a vital role in developing skilled labor in Bangladesh since its inception. With a focus on agriculture and caregiving, MAWTS has adapted its curriculum to align with global market demands, preparing students for international careers and boosting the national economy.
As MAWTS celebrates its 50th anniversary, the success stories of its graduates, like Hilarious Marandy, serve as a testament to the transformative power of vocational education.
Challenges and Continued Commitment
Despite financial constraints and limited funding, MAWTS continues to operate short-term mobile technical schools to provide training in essential skills. The organization’s commitment to its mission of combating unemployment and poverty in Bangladesh remains unwavering, driven by a passion to empower individuals and communities.
As MAWTS looks to expand its educational offerings and reach more individuals, the support of donors and government incentives is crucial in achieving its goals of creating a skilled workforce and reducing unemployment in the country.
