The Albertine Sisters have become a beacon of hope in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, standing as a symbol of compassion and care in the midst of poverty and abandonment. When the devastating war erupted in February 2022, they didn’t hesitate to offer their aid at the Lviv central station, welcoming weary and traumatized individuals coming off evacuation trains. Currently, the sisters have relocated to their newly-established Albertine refuge where they tirelessly provide daily meals and shelter to young mothers in need.

The initial days of the war were filled with intense emotions and turmoil. The streets of Lviv witnessed a constant flow of people fleeing towards the western border, seeking safety and solace. The scenes at the central station were overwhelming as exhausted and disoriented individuals searched for refuge and support.
Sister Geronima shared their daily routine, “We remain vigilant, especially during these tense times, reaching out to those who are lost and in need of guidance. The despair and uncertainty are palpable among the people we encounter. We provide spiritual sustenance and prayers to those who seek comfort in their darkest hours.”
The risk of a humanitarian crisis
Recognizing the looming humanitarian crisis, the Albertine community took action to prevent a catastrophe. With the endless lines of cars heading towards the Polish border and women with children in desperate need of basic necessities, the sisters knew immediate intervention was imperative.
In February 2022, the three dedicated sisters embarked on a mission to Rawa Ruska, near the Ukrainian-Polish border, to assist those in need. They set up a relief station with hot beverages and food, extending a helping hand to the numerous displaced individuals.
A sanctuary for vulnerable women
Despite the challenges, the Albertine Sisters persist in their mission, driven by their unwavering commitment to serve the marginalized. Their journey dates back to 1945 when they were forced out of Soviet Ukraine, abandoning their shelters for the underprivileged. Now, in 2023, they have opened a refuge for homeless women and struggling mothers in Lviv.
Recounting their vision, Sister Geronima expressed, “Our goal is to create a welcoming sanctuary for women in need, irrespective of their background, offering them warmth and security to reclaim their dignity.”
Amidst the impoverished streets
The relentless efforts of the sisters persist, especially in times of crisis like the ongoing pandemic. Grappling with concerns for their safety, they continue their outreach to the destitute and elderly, ensuring no one is left behind.
Today, their refuge in Lviv serves nearly 100 meals daily, welcoming young mothers and women seeking respite from the chaos of war-stricken cities. Their compassionate work shines as a beacon of hope amidst the prevailing darkness.
The path they walk is familiar, navigating the streets they call home, reaching out to the forsaken and deprived. The echoes of their kindness reverberate through the alleys, bringing solace to those in need.
Their legacy of love and devotion continues to inspire, as they stand at the forefront of mercy and compassion, illuminating the way for others to follow.
