Today, on 28 July 2024, the Church celebrates the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, a day close to the heart of the Holy Father.
In his Sunday Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis, who established this day in 2021, reflected on the theme of the day, “Do not cast me off in my old age” (from Psalm 71:9).
Do not abandon the elderly
The Pope emphasized, “Today we celebrate World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly,” stressing the importance of not neglecting the elderly. He expressed concern that the summer days can bring loneliness to many elderly individuals.
Pope Francis called on everyone to listen to the elderly who say, “Do not abandon me!” and to respond with, “I will not abandon you!”
He urged the faithful to work on strengthening the bond between grandparents and grandchildren, emphasizing the vital connection between the young and the elderly.
Applause for all grandparents
“Let us say ‘no’ to the loneliness of the elderly,” the Pope urged. He highlighted the significant role that grandparents play in shaping the future and encouraged everyone to remember and value the elderly in society.
He concluded by calling for a round of applause for all grandparents, recognizing their importance and the love they bring to families.
Pope Francis had also released a special message for this occasion, emphasizing the importance of not abandoning the elderly and acknowledging the blessings they bring to society and the Church.
Let us join in showing our love and appreciation for the grandparents and elderly members of our families on this Fourth World Day dedicated to them. Let us spend time with those who need our support and show them that they are not alone. Together, let us embrace a new path of compassion and understanding towards the elderly.
As we commemorate this day, let us remember to keep the elderly in our prayers and continue to support and care for them with love and respect.
