The tragic landslides in Gofa Zone, Southern Ethiopia, have left a trail of destruction, with the death toll rising and survivors in desperate need of assistance. The first landslide occurred in Kencho Shacha Gozdi due to heavy rains on 21 and 22 July, followed by a second landslide as rescuers tried to help.
Final toll expected to exceed 500
With the current death toll standing at 257, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) anticipates that the final toll will exceed 500. Search teams are working tirelessly to locate the missing individuals buried under the debris.
Moreover, in addition to the loss of lives, over 50,000 people have been deeply affected by the disaster, including displaced families, injured individuals, and those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
The situation is dire, with 5,776 families in urgent need of shelter and 596 families evacuated due to the landslides, including 1,367 vulnerable children. The ongoing rains pose a risk of further mudslides, exacerbating the crisis.
Church response in action
Amidst these challenges, the Ethiopian Catholic Church, in collaboration with other organizations and authorities, is actively engaged in relief efforts. Leveraging its established presence in the region, the Church is working to swiftly distribute aid to those in need.
Life-saving interventions, such as medical services and search and rescue operations, are a top priority. The Church is also providing support services, including counselling, to help survivors cope with trauma and stress.
Appeal for solidarity
Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel of Addis Ababa has issued a heartfelt appeal for all Catholics and people of goodwill to contribute to the relief efforts. As southern Ethiopia grapples with heavy rains and flooding, the impacts of climate change are exacerbating the risk of disasters like landslides.
In the face of this tragedy, solidarity and support from the global community are crucial. The Ethiopian Church and its partners are committed to standing by the survivors and providing vital assistance during this challenging time.
