Welcome to the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education blog, where we highlight the ongoing events and initiatives of the Holy See Pavilion at Venice’s Giudecca Women’s Prison. Here, we showcase a unique blend of art, human rights, and societal marginalization through various exhibits and activities.
The Holy See Pavilion, under the theme “With My Own Eyes,” aims to shed light on individuals often overlooked by society, fostering a culture of encounter and inclusivity. Artists, including Maurizio Cattelan and Zoe Saldana, collaborate with inmates to create meaningful artistic expressions that intertwine with daily prison life.
Exploring Human Rights Through Art
Since its opening, the Pavilion has offered workshops and guided tours for the public, allowing a glimpse into the unique dialogues between artists and inmates. A catalogue, to be published soon, will delve deeper into this transformative project, featuring contributions from Pope Francis and other prominent figures.
Enriching Experiences Through Workshops
The inmates have participated in various workshops, including movement-based activities and artistic sessions inspired by renowned educators. Additionally, a special edition of L’Osservatore di Strada features editorial content written by the inmates themselves, showcasing their creative talents.
Looking ahead, the Pavilion will host screenings of short films and dynamic performances, further engaging inmates and visitors in thought-provoking discussions surrounding freedom and personal growth.
Join us on this journey of artistic exploration and social change at the Holy See Pavilion. Let’s continue to create meaningful connections and empower those whose voices deserve to be heard.
