The clashes between Lebanese Hezbollah and Israeli forces show no signs of abating. Recent reports of violence include an Israeli drone attack on a vehicle in Shaqram, a town in southern Lebanon. Additionally, the Israeli Air Force targeted a Hezbollah weapons depot in Ayta ash Shab and other “terrorist infrastructure sites” in the Houla and Ayta ash Shab areas.
Continued Strife: Drone Launches and Displacement
Drone attacks on Israel have also occurred, with strikes in Hanita and Ya’ara causing fires. In response, the Israeli army launched attacks in southern Lebanon. The violence stemming from a Hamas attack on Israel in October has heightened tensions further, leading to frequent clashes in Lebanon’s Marjayoun district. The toll includes 435 dead, 97 of whom are civilians, and nearly 100,000 displaced individuals.
The AVSI Foundation in Italy reports that approximately 60 schools in Lebanon are operating remotely due to the crisis. As Lebanon’s Ministry of Education prepares for distance learning, families struggle with displacement, unemployment, and basic needs.
A Call for Peace: Bishop Khairallah’s Message
Speaking with Vatican Radio-Vatican News, Bishop Munir Khairallah emphasizes the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza to stem the violence in southern Lebanon. He highlights the Church’s role in providing shelter to displaced individuals, alongside the hospitality extended by families. Despite the challenges, Bishop Khairallah notes a resurgence of faith and a renewed commitment to peace among the Lebanese youth.
Amidst the turmoil, the Church stands as a beacon of hope, offering solace and support to those in need. As Lebanon grapples with uncertainty, the call for peace grows louder, echoing across the region and beyond.
