Exciting News: Minimum Taxi Fare in Rome to Increase!
Get ready for a change in taxi fares in Rome as the city gears up to issue a whopping 1,000 new taxi licenses.
This move comes in anticipation of the Jubilee of 2025, which is projected to bring a surge of tourists to the Eternal City.
Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, expressed, “Taxis are too few, and we urgently need more to avoid the long queues we’re currently witnessing. It was necessary to intervene, and in this case, we took on the responsibility to do so.”

Under the new fare structure, the minimum fare will be €9, rising to €12 on holidays, addressing the fact that a small percentage of current fares fall below this threshold.
The starting rate on the meter will also see a hike, from €3 to €3.50 during daytime on weekdays and from €7 to €7.50 at night.
Moreover, fares from the Aurelian Walls to Rome’s airports will increase: from €50 to €55 for Fiumicino and from €31 to €40 for Ciampino.
Additional discounts will be introduced as well, including an increased 15% discount for women hailing taxis at night, a 10% discount for seniors over 70, and maintaining a 10% discount for hospital visits or post-clubbing rides.
However, the consumer rights group Codacons is against these fare hikes and plans to challenge the decision, labeling it “a slap in the face to tourists and citizens.”
Residents of Rome know the struggle of finding a taxi and enduring long queues. With a mere 7,700 taxis in the city, a significant shortfall is imminent, especially with the Jubilee approaching. To address this, a tender will soon be issued for 1,000 new taxi licenses and NCC (chauffeur-driven car hire) permits.
