As the war in Gaza threatens to ignite the entire Middle East, with conflicts escalating in Yemen and Israel, the Chaldean bishops of Iraq are emphasizing the urgent need for a two-State solution for Israel and Palestine to coexist in peace and security.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of their recent annual Synod presided over by Patriarch Cardinal Raphael Sako in Baghdad, the Iraqi bishops expressed profound worry for the heightened conflicts in the Middle East, especially in the Holy Land.
While condemning all forms of violence, they urged the international community to prioritize peace and work towards ending the devastating war immediately.
Embracing a Two-State Solution
The Chaldean bishops stress that the most viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the creation of two neighboring states living in peace, security, stability, and mutual trust. This position aligns with the stance advocated by the Holy See but faces opposition from the current Israeli government following recent attacks.
Standing with Iraqi Christians
The bishops also addressed the plight of Christian communities in the region, particularly in Iraq, condemning the struggles faced by Christians who have endured marginalization, rights deprivation, and property seizures. Many have been forced to leave in search of a better life.
They called on the Iraqi government to value Christians by fostering trust, promoting national unity, and utilizing their skills for the country’s development.
Ensuring Equal Rights
The Synod advocated for equal political and civil rights for Christians in Iraq, demanding their full inclusion and the prevention of property seizures by certain groups. They commended the recent decree restoring recognition of Cardinal Sako as the head of the Chaldean Catholic Church.
Prioritizing Peace and Stability
The bishops urged the government to prioritize the interests of the Iraqi people over sectarian divisions, emphasizing the importance of law, justice, national unity, citizenship, and public services for all citizens.
Looking towards the future, they called for unity and solidarity among Christians in the region, emphasizing faith and land as unifying factors.
Fostering Christian Unity in the Middle East
In a show of solidarity with neighboring countries’ bishops, they highlighted the need for a new vision and practical steps to secure the presence and role of Christians in their societies.
Unity, they emphasized, is the key to strength and salvation, as they continue to promote coexistence, respect for differences, and hope within civil societies.
