The 1500th Anniversary of Santa Maria in Portico: A Message from Pope Francis
On July 17th, 2024, the Catholic Church celebrates the 1500th anniversary of the veneration of Santa Maria in Portico – Romanae Portus Securitatis, or protector of the Eternal City. Pope Francis took this special opportunity to send a heartfelt letter to Fr Antonio Piccolo, Rector General of the Order of the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, commending them on their mission of charity, peacebuilding, and evangelization.
The Origins of Santa Maria in Portico
The devotion to Santa Maria in Portico dates back to July 17, 524, when the Mother of God miraculously appeared in the home of Santa Galla, a Roman noblewoman. Witnessed by Pope Saint John I, the Portico was transformed into a Marian Sanctuary and a charity hospice. Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of caring for the poor and marginalized, turning our churches into welcoming sanctuaries for those in need.
A Message of Peace and Hope
During a time of turmoil in the Church, when Pope John I faced political conspiracies and wars, the Holy Virgin revealed herself as a symbol of peace and comfort. Pope Francis calls upon us to promote peace and unity in our world today, following the example of Saint Leonardi and seeking refuge in the maternal embrace of Mary.
Continuing the Evangelizing Work
As the Order of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God prepares for Jubilee celebrations, Pope Francis encourages them to emulate the evangelizing spirit of Saint Giovanni Leonardi. By focusing on the integral formation of Religious and spreading the message of the Gospel joyfully, we can continue the mission of building a better world for all.
Let us look to Mary as a source of strength and hope, and may our actions reflect the love and compassion she embodies. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those in need and spread the message of peace and unity in our world.
