Church Delegation Urges PM Modi to Address Rising Anti-Christian Violence
A Church delegation led by Archbishop Andrews Thazhath recently met with the newly re-elected nationalist Hindu Prime Minister to voice their concerns over the increasing anti-Christian violence in the country. The delegation, representing the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), emphasized the need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and safeguard the rights of the Christian community.
The Catholic Bishops of India have expressed their growing apprehension about the escalating hostility towards Christians in the nation. During the meeting held in New Delhi, Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, alongside other bishops, called on PM Modi to take immediate action to curb the violence and harassment faced by Christians.
Misuse of Anti-Conversion Laws
During the cordial 45-minute meeting, the CBCI delegation raised concerns about the misuse of anti-conversion laws and the unjustified attacks on Christians under the false accusation of forced conversions. They presented a memorandum highlighting these issues to PM Modi and urged for necessary steps to be taken to protect the Christian community from such discriminatory practices.
Addressing Discrimination
The memorandum also reiterated the Church’s plea for equal treatment for Christian Dalits, advocating for the extension of special benefits granted to low-caste Dalit individuals to Christian and Muslim Dalits as well. The bishops also emphasized the need for Christian representation in important minority commissions and demanded fair treatment for Christian NGOs facing challenges in renewing their registrations under the FCRA.
Pope Francis’ Potential Visit
The delegation commended PM Modi for extending an invitation to Pope Francis to visit India, emphasizing the importance of accelerating this process. They also sought Modi’s intervention to address ethnic violence in Manipur, demonstrating the Church’s commitment to promoting peace and harmony in the country.
