The assembly, with the theme “Media and Pastoral Integral Ecology: Walking Together to Build a Whole and Harmonious Natural Creation,” brought together 32 members and Catholic Church leaders at the Mary Mother of Carmel Retreat House in Ruteng.
One of the key focuses of the event was the Diocese of Ruteng’s dedication to tackling the environmental challenges in its region, such as severe pollution, habitat destruction, and food crises that lead to health issues like stunting.
RD Benediktus Gaguk, the chairman of the diocese’s Caritas Commission, emphasized the role of humans in exacerbating these crises by exploiting nature for materialistic gains.
Bishop Kornelius Sipayung highlighted the dangers of human arrogance towards nature, echoing Pope Francis’ message in Laudate Deum.
Participants also delved into the Indigenous Manggarai culture’s perspective on the universe as a life-giving entity, stressing the interconnectedness of all elements in fostering a harmonious relationship with the environment.
The assembly took practical steps towards ecological sustainability by planting ‘SIGNIS Trees’ like avocado and flamboyant as a symbol of reforestation efforts.
Discussions also included organizational aspects such as financial independence, project collaborations, and revisions to SIGNIS Indonesia’s bylaws to amplify the network’s impact on environmental and media endeavors.
