In the Diocese of Molegbe, located in the Province of Nord-Ubangi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a remarkable event took place this week. 400 children, both girls and boys, including members of the Catholic Youth Movement named “Kizito et Anuarite,” along with 45 accompanying adults, made a unique commitment. They pledged to plant a tree in each of their family’s homes.
The group of 400 children gathered for a five-day summer camp at Loko village, where they engaged in various activities focused on education and sharing experiences related to Laudato Sì. This initiative stemmed from a recommendation made during the conclusion of the 2023 – 2024 Diocesan Pastoral Year. The children at the summer camp in Loko village wholeheartedly embraced this pledge.
During the summer camp, a Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr Egide Mbimba from the Saint-Paul de Businga-Cité Parish. Children aged 8 to 14 from various villages like Mbwasenge, Molengo, Bowozo, Kuluwa, Maniko, and Ngusa participated in this year’s summer camp.
Exploring Pope Francis’ Inspirational Message
Throughout the summer camp, the children were guided to reflect on Pope Francis’ message to the youth during his Apostolic Voyage to the DRC in 2023. They also learned valuable lessons from the encyclical Laudato Sì.
On February 2, 2023, Pope Francis addressed young people and Catechists at the Martyrs’ Stadium in Kinshasa. His message to the youth of DRC emphasized the importance of shaping the future of the country.
The children were also introduced to the teachings of Laudato Sì, focusing on environmental protection. They had a hands-on experience through a guided tour of the Loko Botanical and Fish Gardens, established in 1993 by Protestant missionaries. The children learned about various exotic tree species, fruit trees, fish varieties, and even a water turbine.
Promoting Ecological Conversion
During the summer camp, 14 children from the village of Kuluwa received the Sacrament of Baptism. Additionally, 15 young individuals received their First Communion during the Eucharistic celebration with the Kizito and Anuarite Movement Choir.
