Welcome to a New Era of Synodality!
Cardinal Mario Grech, the General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops, recently unveiled the eagerly anticipated “Instrumentum Laboris” for the upcoming October assembly. In his presentation, he described it as “the result and testimony of a true polyphony.”
Cardinal Grech emphasized the Synod as a remarkable “listening workshop,” where the focus is not only on listening to the voice of God but also to the world. He highlighted the importance of discerning what God wants to communicate to the Church at this current juncture.
A Symphony of Voices
The process leading to the finalization of the “Instrumentum Laboris” was marked by a vibrant and diverse exchange of ideas. With 108 national summaries and numerous contributions, the Synod displayed a “virtuous dynamism,” showcasing a colorful concert of voices that represent the rich tapestry of the Church.
Cardinal Grech expressed his hope that this extended listening process will enable the synodal Church to discern the Word of Jesus for today’s men and women, fueling hope and strengthening messengers of the Gospel.
Promoting Transparency and Accountability
Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, the Synod’s General Relator, underscored the need for a living and moving Church, one that embraces diversity and fosters a culture of openness and self-evaluation. He highlighted concrete initiatives where synodality has flourished, emphasizing the importance of relationships over bureaucracy.
The link between synodality and mission was a key theme explored by Monsignor Riccardo Battocchio and Father Giacomo Costa, stressing the essential role of formation and discernment in the synodal journey.
The Future of Synodality
The upcoming assembly will delve into the sections of the Instrumentum Laboris, providing opportunities for prayer, reflection, and collaborative discussions. The journey will culminate in a final document that sets the stage for continued growth as a synodal missionary people.
As we embrace this new era of synodality, let us heed the call to listen, engage, and journey together as one Body of Christ, united in our diversity and fueled by the Holy Spirit.
