Welcome AMECEA Bishops: Safeguarding Children and the Vulnerable
Recently, a conference gathered Bishops from the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) region alongside clerics focused on protecting minors in dioceses. The efforts of the region in safeguarding children, minors, and the vulnerable have been recognized and appreciated by a senior Vatican official.
The Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Bishop Luis Manuel Ali, commended the AMECEA participants for their dedication to safeguarding issues. In his address, Bishop Ali highlighted the crucial role that Small Christian Communities (SCCs) play in promoting safeguarding efforts within the region.
Families as the Key for Child Protection
Bishop Ali emphasized the importance of families as the foundation for child protection. He praised all AMECEA member Episcopal Conferences for establishing safeguarding offices and working on aligning their policies with relevant church documents such as Vos Estis Lux Mundi. The visionary leadership within the region, supported by the church’s structure, plays a strategic role in ensuring the protection of children.
The Memorare Initiative
Bishop Ali also mentioned the Memorare Initiative, a collaboration between the Commission and local Churches to strengthen prevention and safeguarding capacities for children and vulnerable adults. The rapid growth of the Church in Africa, particularly in terms of committed faithful, children, youth, and vocations, underscores the importance of safeguarding efforts.
Solidarity with AMECEA Countries
Expressing solidarity with the challenges faced by various countries in the AMECEA region, Bishop Ali highlighted the Commission’s commitment to accompanying local churches in developing and implementing safeguarding guidelines. The Church aims to provide unwavering support and witness to the love of the Risen Christ amidst natural disasters, political violence, and conflicts.
As we continue our mission to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our communities, the active involvement and commitment of the AMECEA Bishops are lauded for providing tangible structures for prevention and healing. Together, we strive to create a safer environment for all.
