Welcome to Exaudi’s Reflections section where Father Ángel Espinosa de los Monteros discusses the profound topic of “When faith is lost.”
***
Today, I want to share a thought-provoking reflection inspired by the words of Fray Abel de Jesús. His brief message carries immense depth as he says:
“When Christians lose faith, they turn liturgy into celebration, pastoral care into entertainment, spiritual direction into psychotherapy, holiness into ethics, and prayer into the consumption of sentimental experiences.”
The Liturgy Turned into a Party
With the loss of faith, Christians unintentionally transform the sacred liturgy into a mere festive celebration. The solemnity of events like the first communion can get overshadowed by decorations, games, and festivities that divert attention from the spiritual essence. The significance of the Eucharist can get lost amidst superficial distractions like event planning and external appearances.
The Pastoral Turned into Entertainment
Pastoral care, meant to guide conversion and spiritual growth, can devolve into mere entertainment. Instead of deepening preparations for marriages or fostering the community’s spiritual journey, the focus shifts to filling schedules with superficial activities. Pastoral care becomes a series of social events rather than a source of religious fervor.
Spiritual Direction Converted into Psychotherapy
What should be a path to discern and follow divine guidance, spiritual direction sometimes ends up resembling a therapy session. The quest for personal well-being overshadows the pursuit of God’s will. In challenging moments, some might choose emotional comfort over spiritual growth.
Holiness Converted into Ethics
While ethics and holiness share connections, they differ in their focus. Ethics revolve around fundamental principles, while holiness seeks perfection and love for God in every action. Holiness goes beyond ethical standards to embrace doing good, caring for the vulnerable, and embodying deep love for God.
Prayer Converted into Consumption of Sentimental Experiences
Lastly, prayer can become a mere consumption of emotional encounters. Some shy away from personal reflection and Gospel readings, opting for group prayer sessions where emotions and experiences are shared. Yet, Jesus encouraged personal, intimate prayer that fosters a deep connection with the Creator.
Conclusion
Dear friends, let us guard our faith zealously. Let’s be true apostles of Jesus Christ, committed to doing good and living to please God in all we do. May God’s blessings always be upon you.
