The Future of Youth Engagement in the Indonesian Catholic Church
Exciting developments are underway in the Indonesian Catholic Church as the National Plenary Meeting of the Indonesian Youth Commission (Komkep) recently convened to outline innovative strategies for engaging with young people. The meeting, held at the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference (KWI) headquarters in Jakarta, focused on the theme “Embrace and Grow Young Catholics for a Viral and Vital Church.”
Representatives from all 37 diocesan youth commissions came together to discuss ways to deepen the Church’s connection with young Catholics. Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation “Christus Vivit,” the plenary highlighted the importance of embracing and growing young Catholics. The goal is to create a Church that is both ‘vital,’ positively impacting society, and ‘viral,’ dynamically spreading the Christian message.
The strategies discussed at the meeting include enhancing pastoral care, creating inclusive environments, and addressing the practical and spiritual needs of young Catholics. The delegates acknowledged the success of recent initiatives such as the Indonesian Youth Day III and participation in the World Youth Day Lisbon 2023, which have revitalized youth ministry in the region.
Challenges such as mental health issues, post-pandemic job scarcity, environmental concerns, and digital technology’s influence on youth were also recognized. The plenary emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to involving the Holy Spirit in guiding youth initiatives.
One key outcome of the meeting was the call for companions to young Catholics to create open and collaborative environments where young people feel valued and involved. This includes providing opportunities for them to lead and participate in Church and community activities authentically.
Furthermore, the importance of continuous self-evaluation among youth leaders was highlighted, as well as the need for training in digital media engagement, ecological advocacy, and mental health support. Financial strategies were also discussed to ensure the sustainability and expansion of youth-oriented programs through collaborative funding models.
In conclusion, the plenary reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant and supportive community for young Catholics. It echoed Pope Francis’ call to listen genuinely to the youth, placing them at the center of the Church’s mission and evangelization efforts.
