Welcome to the 50th Social Week of Catholics in Italy, where the focus is on building the polis to contribute to the common good. This event opened on July 3 in Trieste with the theme “In the heart of democracy: Participation between history and future.” The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, addressed 900 delegates from all the Churches of Italy at 5 p.m. in Piazza Unità d’Italia. This gathering includes representatives from dioceses, ecclesial movements, and lay aggregations coming together for four days of discussions, meetings, and proposals for collaboration within their communities.
The highlight of the week will be the visit of Pope Francis on Sunday. The Pontiff, on his third pastoral trip to Italy this year, will close the Congress Center in the morning before leading a Holy Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Piazza Unità d’Italia. This visit signifies an important moment for the local community and the Catholic Church in Italy.
Between the synodal path and the spirit of Blessed Toniolo
Trieste has transformed into a hotbed of participation during this event. Delegates have engaged in numerous meetings, public initiatives, and open-air activities across the city center. From Good Practice Villages to Plazas of Democracy, the week is filled with opportunities for discussion, dialogue, and cultural performances at the Verdi theater. This event aligns with the synodal path of the Church, inspired by Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo’s vision of active engagement and contribution to society.
A preparatory document
Dioceses have been reflecting on a preparatory document that emphasizes the importance of active participation in shaping the future. Emphasizing the need for democratic engagement and a sense of service in power, the document calls for collaboration and inclusivity in decision-making processes and community initiatives.
