Welcome to the Vatican News blog, where we bring you the latest insightful interviews and stories from the heart of the Catholic Church. Today, we have an exclusive interview with the Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Addis Ababa, who shares with us the Ethiopian Catholic bishops’ recent Ad Limina visit to Rome and their meeting with Pope Francis.
During their visit to the Holy See, the Ethiopian bishops had the opportunity to speak with Pope Francis about the ongoing conflicts in their country that have greatly affected the population. Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel of Addis Ababa, President of the Episcopal Conference of Ethiopia, expressed their gratitude for the Pope’s support and prayers, emphasizing the importance of continuing to be close to the people in times of war and poverty.
What was discussed with Pope Francis?
Cardinal Souraphiel highlighted the challenges faced by the youth in Ethiopia, who make up a significant portion of the population and aspire to improve their lives. He spoke of the struggles young people face as they seek opportunities abroad, often encountering hardships and exploitation. The Cardinal emphasized the importance of supporting and guiding the youth towards better prospects.
Pope Francis, known for his advocacy for migrants and refugees, encouraged the bishops to remain close to the people, especially the vulnerable and marginalized. He stressed the role of bishops as shepherds who must stand in solidarity with their flock, offering support and compassion during difficult times.
How is the Catholic Church in Ethiopia?
Being a minority community in a predominantly Christian country, the Catholic Church in Ethiopia faces many challenges. Despite these obstacles, the Church continues to provide essential social services, such as schools, health centers, and humanitarian aid, supported by organizations like Caritas. Cardinal Souraphiel emphasized the Church’s commitment to being a beacon of hope and compassion in the midst of poverty and conflict.
Conflicts in Ethiopia
The Archbishop also shed light on the ongoing conflicts in Ethiopia, particularly in regions like Tigray and Oromia. While political tensions persist, the true victims are the ordinary people who bear the brunt of the violence and displacement. The Catholic Church stands in solidarity with the suffering population, advocating for peace, reconciliation, and healing for those affected by the conflicts.
As we reflect on the Archbishop’s words, we are reminded of the importance of unity, compassion, and solidarity in times of adversity. The Catholic Church in Ethiopia continues to be a beacon of hope and love, reaching out to those in need and embodying the teachings of Christ.
