Welcome to the heart-wrenching reality of Sudan, where conflict and suffering have become the norm. The Catholic Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan (SCBC) are raising their voices in a plea for peace amid escalating violence and humanitarian crises.
As the fabric of Sudanese society continues to be torn apart by war, the people are left in shock, trauma, and disbelief at the levels of violence and hatred that have consumed their country. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shows no signs of abating, with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan making it clear that negotiations will only happen on the battlefield.
Al-Burhan remains resolute in his stance against sitting at a negotiation table, citing the need for victory before any talks can commence. The toll of this conflict is staggering, with over 10 million Sudanese displaced since the war began in April 2023. The RSF’s territorial sieges have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge in areas like the Catholic mission of Dar Mariam in al-Shajara.
Despite the dire humanitarian conditions faced by the refugees, attempts at rescue have been unsuccessful, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The bishops have condemned the self-serving interests fueling the conflict, emphasizing the intertwining of military and economic power in Sudan.
As the people of Sudan continue to suffer at the hands of war and greed, the call for peace grows louder. It’s time for the international community to step up and put an end to the cycle of violence and displacement that plagues this nation.
