The parish priest of Saint John the Baptist Church, Father Emmanuel Saintéliat, was taken captive by gang members during the violent raid on Gressier, a municipality near Port-au-Prince. Despite reports stating that no ransom was paid for his release, the circumstances surrounding his abduction were indeed harrowing. The group known as Vivre Ensemble, led by former police officer Jimmy Cherizier, was responsible for the chaos that unfolded, with 20 people tragically losing their lives.
The notorious leader of this group has been linked to further unrest in the country, with recent demands for political change. The situation escalated in Gressier as armed groups wreaked havoc in the community, creating fear and unrest. The presence of a Kenyan-led peacekeeping contingent was challenged, leading to a tense standoff. Luckily, the police were able to regain control of the area, ensuring some semblance of stability.
