As the Vatican team arrived at the pitch following a tour of the castle, the excitement and anticipation for the game were palpable. The St Mary’s side, specially formed for the occasion, included a player from the England Men’s Deaf cricket team, adding an element of diversity and inclusivity to the match.
The Vatican opened the batting and showcased their prowess with a strong performance, scoring 136 for 5. St Mary’s put up a good fight, with an impressive opening partnership that kept the game neck and neck. However, the Vatican bowlers turned up the pressure, leading to a tense finish where the British side fell just five runs short, with a total of 131 for 5.
Building Bridges through Cricket
Reflecting on the power of sports to bring people together, Pope Francis emphasized the role of cricket in fostering relationships and promoting peace. This sentiment was echoed by Professor Anthony McLaran, Vice-Chancellor of St Mary’s University, who highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the players and their shared love for cricket and the Church.
Professor McLaran noted, “We have so many people competing from different parts of the world, but they have in common their love of cricket and their love of the Church. That’s something to celebrate.”
Upcoming Match against the King’s Team
The Vatican team’s journey continued with a visit to the Chapel Royal, King Charles’ personal place of worship, for an ecumenical service. The team’s next challenge awaits them in a clash with the King’s XI at the royal residence of Windsor Castle, symbolizing a meeting of two sovereign states.
As preparations for the match unfold, UK Ambassador to the Holy See, Chris Trott, emphasized the historical significance of the encounter and the complex relationship between the Holy See and the United Kingdom.
