Rome Revamps Major Metro Stations in Preparation for Jubilee
Rome is gearing up for the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025 by embarking on renovation works that will temporarily close two of the city’s busiest subway stations on the Metro A line.
The iconic Spagna station near the Spanish Steps will be closed from July 15 to October 3, while the Ottaviano station, which serves the Vatican, will be closed from July 22 to September 9.
During the renovation period, trains will continue to pass through these stations without stopping.
As part of the city’s metro upgrades, the Vittorio Emanuele Metro A station has recently reopened with a stunning new installation by Italian artist Esther Stocker, in collaboration with the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts and ATAC, the city’s public transport provider.
Stocker completely transformed the station with over 8,000 meters of black adhesive tape, creating a unique visual experience for commuters.
The ongoing transformation of Rome’s public transport network includes the temporary replacement of trams with buses to facilitate the redevelopment of the Porta Maggiore tram depot, scheduled from July to December.
In addition, the Metro A line now closes early at 9:00 pm from Sunday to Thursday, with shuttle buses servicing the route after this time, until December 5.
These changes are necessary to complete maintenance works on the subway before the influx of pilgrims and tourists expected during the Jubilee.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has promised that the various Jubilee projects underway in Rome will significantly transform the city’s landscape.
