Experience the Thrilling Palio di Siena Horse Race
Get ready for an exhilarating spectacle as the historic Palio di Siena horse race returns on Tuesday, 2 July, in the charming Tuscan city. This centuries-old tradition sees bareback riders competing in a fierce battle in the medieval heart of Siena.
The Palio, dating back to the 17th century, is a vibrant event held on two dates each summer – 2 July and 16 August. Tens of thousands of spectators gather to witness the beauty and excitement of this colorful festival.
During the race, riders and horses thunder around the central Piazza del Campo, competing fiercely between the 10 out of the city’s 17 rival contrade or neighborhoods, including Bruco, Civetta, Giraffa, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Pantera, Onda, Oca, and Valdimontone.
Although the Palio has seen cancellations in the past due to historical events, it remains a beloved tradition. While some have voiced concerns over animal welfare during the event, the passion and history of the race continue to captivate audiences.
Don’t miss the excitement! Tune in to the live coverage of the race on Italian television network La7 from 17:15 on Tuesday evening.
