Pope Francis Meets with Al Gore to Discuss Climate Change
Recently, Pope Francis received a special visitor in a private audience at the Vatican. Former US Vice President, Al Gore, met with the Pope to discuss the pressing issue of climate change. Gore, who is in Rome for a three-day summit sponsored by his “Climate Reality Project,” commended the Pope for his influential encyclical Laudato sí, which played a crucial role in the adoption of the 2015 Paris Accords on climate change.
The Holy See Press Office released a statement detailing the meeting, highlighting Gore’s praise for the Vatican’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Gore noted that the Vatican serves as an example of “ecological transition” by announcing plans for an agrivoltaic plant at Santa Maria di Galeria. This practical demonstration of sustainable practices impressed Gore and reinforced the importance of taking action against climate change.
During their discussion, Pope Francis expressed gratitude for Gore’s dedication to raising awareness about climate issues throughout his political career. The two leaders emphasized the urgency of accelerating the transition to sustainable energy sources, despite resistance from powerful fossil fuel companies. They also explored potential collaborations to enhance public awareness and promote sustainable practices on a global scale.
Following their private meeting, Gore visited St Peter’s Basilica and met with Cardinal Archpriest Mauro Gambetti. During the visit, Gore pledged support for World Children’s Day in 2026 and the upcoming Jubilee Year in 2025, showing his commitment to advancing environmental causes and promoting a sustainable future.
It is encouraging to see influential figures like Pope Francis and Al Gore coming together to address the critical issue of climate change. Their collaboration serves as a beacon of hope for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
