Welcome to the inaugural SACRU Summer School: “A New World Order: The Way Ahead between Democracy and Authoritarian Challenges,” set to take place from July 1st to July 14th, 2024, at the picturesque Lisbon campus of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The Summer School is a testament to the global outreach of the Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities (SACRU), bringing together 16 students from 6 universities across Europe, Oceania, North America, and South America.
This immersive program aims to provide a unique educational experience that combines academic study with cultural immersion. The theme of this first edition revolves around the critical challenges facing liberal democracy in our increasingly interconnected and complex world. From global conflicts to the ongoing pandemic, liberal democracy has faced unprecedented scrutiny and skepticism.
According to SACRU Secretary General and Vice-Rector of Università Cattolica, Prof. Pier Sandro Cocconcelli, the Summer School reflects the Alliance’s dedication to engaging the young generation worldwide. This initiative goes beyond traditional teaching methods to foster a sense of global community and collaboration among students.
The multidisciplinary nature of the program sets it apart, with students from diverse academic backgrounds coming together to explore the complexities of modern global issues. Professors from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, and Sophia University will offer their expertise, enriching the learning experience.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in cultural activities and explore the vibrant city of Lisbon, enhancing their overall experience. Prof. Mónica Dias, Director of the Institute of Political Studies at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Scientific Director of the Summer School, highlights the value of global collaboration in addressing the challenges facing democratic societies.
