Pope Francis Expresses Hopes to Visit Nicaea in 2025
In an exciting announcement, Pope Francis expressed his desire to travel to Turkey in 2025 to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea. This monumental event marks the first Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in the year 325.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Pope Francis shared his enthusiasm for the trip. “It is a journey I am truly looking forward to making,” the Pope exclaimed. The delegation was in Rome to honor the feast of Sts Peter and Paul, the revered founders of the Church in Rome.
A Celebration of Unity and Friendship
Pope Francis emphasized the significance of the visit as an opportunity to renew the bonds between the Catholic Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He highlighted the commitment to working together towards unity and mutual understanding.
The Pope reminisced about his past meetings with the current Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I, including their historic encounter in Jerusalem in 2014. He praised their joint efforts to promote dialogue and harmony between the two churches.
Prayers for Peace and Reconciliation
Reflecting on the importance of unity and peace, Pope Francis recalled a peace ceremony held in Vatican Gardens after the Jerusalem meeting. Together with Patriarch Bartholomew, they invited representatives from Israel and Palestine to pray for peace in the Holy Land and beyond.
In light of current global conflicts, the Pope urged for collective prayers for an end to war and hostilities. He particularly mentioned the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and called for solidarity and compassion among all nations.
Embracing Hope and Mercy
Amidst a world plagued by uncertainty, Pope Francis proposed the theme “Pilgrims of Hope” for the upcoming Jubilee Year. He invited Eastern Orthodox Churches to join in prayer and support for the Holy Year, aiming for spiritual growth and renewal.
