During the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Pope Francis graciously met with the participants at the Vatican for a papal audience, where he discussed the crucial role of the Commission in assisting Latin American bishops’ conferences and the different Dicasteries of the Holy See in spreading the message of the Gospel in the region.
In his remarks, Pope Francis highlighted the close connection between the Commission’s focus and the ongoing synodal reform within the Church. He referenced Cardinal Ratzinger’s words on reform and emphasized the positive goal it aims to achieve.
Supporting Church in Latin America
The Pope pointed out that the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium seeks to transform the Latin America Commission into a service that brings pastoral care and affection from the Pope to the Church in the region. He stressed the importance of discreetly and effectively helping the Church in Latin America embrace synodality and communion as they journey together in faith.
Referencing the example of St. Juan Diego and the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pope Francis highlighted the simplicity and depth of collaboration between the laity and the hierarchy in Latin America. He noted the trust in God’s mission that drives the lay faithful to carry out their roles within the Church.
Building Bridges of Fraternity
In closing his address, Pope Francis encouraged the Pontifical Commission for Latin America to inspire local Churches to discern their unique path of evangelization while fostering communion with the universal Church. He emphasized the importance of building bridges of reconciliation, inclusion, and fraternity that allow people to journey together in authentic pastoral experiences.
