Rome Revamps City Streets with Triple the Bins!
Rome is taking a big step towards keeping its streets clean by introducing a whopping 18,000 new rubbish bins! This move triples the total number of bins in the city, just in time for the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025.
The first glimpse of the new bins was along Via dei Fori Imperiali, a popular stretch between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, in the heart of Rome. The city’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, proudly presented the bins as “more beautiful, sustainable, and spacious.”
Each bin even has its own special name – Cestò – a clever play on words in Roman dialect meaning “I’m in”.
The new bins, named Cestò, have a nostalgic feel with a modern twist, resembling the classic cast-iron bins from Jubilee Year 2000. According to official statements, the bins are made of fireproof and explosion-proof material, ensuring safety. They are also sustainable, as they are crafted from recycled plastic and are recyclable.
Gualtieri plans to replace the existing four bin models across the city, bringing overall uniformity to Rome’s streets.
The increased number of bins will also improve rubbish collection in busy areas around St Peter’s, the Colosseum, and Piazza Venezia, enhancing the overall cleanliness of these renowned landmarks.
Earlier this year, Rome introduced “smart bins” equipped with technology to monitor waste levels and types, a step towards efficient waste management in the city.
With the rising concerns over environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness, Rome’s initiative to beautify the streets with stylish and practical bins is a step in the right direction. Let’s hope these new bins will encourage residents and visitors alike to dispose of waste responsibly and keep Rome clean!
