Caritas Indonesia Celebrates 18 Years of Serving the Needy
Caritas Indonesia, also known as Karina KWI, recently commemorated its 18th anniversary with a reaffirmed commitment to fostering the ‘Church of the Poor’. The event was marked by a Holy Mass attended by Indonesian bishops, potential donors, and beneficiaries of the agency’s aid programs.
Renowned for its emergency response initiatives, Caritas Indonesia plays a pivotal role in channeling funds from local and international donors to support various humanitarian projects. Bishop Anton B. Subianto, OSC, the president of KWI, emphasized the agency’s compassionate spirit, stating, “Karina KWI embodies the Catholic Church’s commitment to helping the less fortunate in Indonesia and beyond.”
Notable Catholic donors were commended by Bishop Subianto for their generosity driven by Christian values that enrich both their lives and the lives of others. The agency’s humanitarian efforts extend beyond Indonesian borders, with recent aid projects in Turkey and Bangladesh following devastating earthquakes.
Bishop AM Sutrisnaatmaka, MSF, praised the swift response of donors during times of crisis, reflecting the core values of Caritas Indonesia. The agency’s commitment to transparency and accountability is further strengthened by the involvement of Catholic professionals like Mrs. Fransiska Mok, who ensures impeccable management through strict auditing protocols.
Mr. HY Susmanto, a former director of the Bank of Indonesia, emphasized the importance of promoting Caritas Indonesia as a vital humanitarian arm of the church. Collaborative efforts are key to fulfilling their mission, as highlighted by Mrs. Rina Bambang, who underscores the active participation of the congregation in carrying out acts of compassion.
Fr. Freddy Taruk, the executive director of Caritas Indonesia, clarified the agency’s affiliation with Caritas Internationalis, a global network operating in 162 countries. This affiliation underscores their commitment to addressing humanitarian needs worldwide.
