In the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia reflects on the critical visit made by CNEWA last year. The visit, led by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan and joined by Msgr. Peter I. Vaccari and Michael J.L. La Civita, was vital in providing hope and aid to Ukrainian faith-based organizations and refugees in Europe.
Upon receiving CNEWA’s Faith & Culture Award at the Catholic Media Conference in Atlanta, Archbishop Borys expressed his gratitude for the recognition and support offered by CNEWA to Eastern churches worldwide and the Ukrainian Catholic Church specifically.
The new award, presented by Msgr. Vaccari, acknowledges Archbishop Borys for his commitment to upholding the dignity of every individual amidst times of turmoil and conflict. His recent statement urging against political violence and in favor of peace through dialogue further underscores his dedication to his beliefs.
Archbishop Borys, a regular contributor to CNEWA’s ONE magazine, stresses the importance of pursuing truth and sharing stories of hope even in the face of tragedy. He emphasizes the role of Catholic journalism in offering a counter-narrative to despair and cynicism, ultimately pointing to the resilience of Ukraine as a beacon of hope.
With faith and perseverance, Archbishop Borys encourages the pursuit of truth and the sharing of stories that inspire and uplift. His words echo the sentiment that hope is not blind optimism but a tangible force that can overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
