Archbishop Georg Gänswein appointed as Apostolic Nuncio to Baltic Countries
Exciting news coming from the Vatican as Pope Francis appoints Archbishop Georg Gänswein as the Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia.
This significant appointment was announced through a statement released by the Holy See Press Office. Archbishop Gänswein, who currently holds the title of Titular Archbishop of Urbisaglia and is the Prefect Emeritus of the Papal Household, will now take on this crucial diplomatic role in the Baltic countries.
At 67 years old, Archbishop Gänswein is most notably recognized for serving as the private secretary to Pope Benedict XVI throughout his papacy and retirement. In addition, he was appointed as Prefect of the Pontifical Household in December 2012 and ordained as an archbishop in January 2013.
Despite the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, Archbishop Gänswein continued to fulfill his dual roles, supporting both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict for the past seven years.
It is worth noting that the previous Apostolic Nuncio in the Baltic countries was Archbishop Petar Rajič, who recently received a new appointment as the Nuncio to Italy and San Marino. This transition left the Apostolic See in the Baltic countries vacant until now.
As Archbishop Georg Gänswein steps into this new chapter of his ecclesiastical journey, we wish him the best of luck in his diplomatic endeavors in the Baltic region.
