During their audience with Pope Francis, the Bishops were encouraged to foster collaboration and strengthen relationships between Muslims and Christians in Guinea. The Pope emphasized the importance of nurturing a harmonious coexistence between the two religious communities, promoting mutual respect and understanding. Bishop Raphael Balla Guilavogui, President of the Guinean Bishops’ Conference, shared these insights with Vatican News.
Exploring the Vatican
Throughout their “ad limina” visit from June 17 to June 21, the Guinean Bishops engaged with various departments of the Roman Curia. This experience allowed them to deepen their connection with the universal Church and enhance their collaboration with the Vatican.
Reflecting on the visit, Bishop Guilavogui expressed their joy at the opportunity to engage with different dicasteries, strengthening their bonds with Rome. He highlighted the growth of their Episcopal Conference since their last visit in 2014, emphasizing the expansion of their leadership and presence in Guinea.
Promoting Interfaith Dialogue
Bishop Guilavogui further elaborated on their discussions with Pope Francis, emphasizing the positive interactions with the Holy Father. The meeting delved into the Church’s position in Guinea, interfaith dialogue with the Muslim majority, and the crucial relationship between clergy and the faithful.
Noting the peaceful coexistence between the Catholic Church and Islam in Guinea, Bishop Guilavogui highlighted the collaborative efforts between the two religious groups. He cited examples of religious leaders working together for the common good and serving as mediators in the country’s socio-political sphere.
Supporting Priestly Ministry
Regarding Church-State relations, Bishop Guilavogui shared Pope Francis’ encouragement to maintain a positive and peaceful engagement with the government, advancing the Gospel message in a harmonious environment. The Pontiff also stressed the importance of supporting priests and nurturing a close bond between Bishops and clergy to enhance their ministry effectiveness.
