During a meeting with the COMECE, Pope Francis addressed various topics, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the outcomes of the recent European elections, which highlighted a rise in nationalistic and Eurosceptic parties across Western Europe. Following the audience, Archbishop Antoine Hérouard shared the European bishops’ concerns regarding the challenges facing the EU institutions and the potential role of Christian Churches and other religious communities in helping Europe reconnect with its “European soul,” as Pope Francis described it.
Nationalism is Not the Answer
Archbishop Hérouard stressed the importance of solidarity among EU members, pointing out Europe’s vulnerability in the international arena. He argued that nationalism is not the solution to the numerous challenges Europe faces, including issues like migration. Instead, he advocated for a stronger sense of unity and cooperation among European nations.
Addressing Dissatisfaction
Discussing the recent European Parliament elections, Archbishop Hérouard acknowledged the growing disillusionment among European citizens with certain EU decisions. While far-right parties made gains in countries like France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy, pro-European parties saw success in Eastern European nations like Poland and Slovakia. Despite the increased presence of nationalist groups in the Parliament, the pro-European ‘Ursula’ coalition retained its majority.
Promoting Unity and Peace
Archbishop Hérouard emphasized the importance of Europe focusing on the common good and strengthening its influence within member states to promote peace internationally, beginning with the situation in Ukraine.
Building Bridges Through Dialogue
He highlighted the role of Churches and religious communities in fostering dialogue and unity, echoing Pope Francis’s call to offer a message of hope to a disillusioned European populace. By promoting understanding and cooperation, these groups can help Europe navigate its current challenges.
“We are not a political party, we don’t have solutions, but we have to show that problems are always wider than the immediate interests of individual countries.”
In conclusion, Archbishop Hérouard underscored the importance of reevaluating the place of religions and beliefs within European member states to strengthen the European Union as a whole.
