Exploring the East: News Highlights
Welcome to this week’s edition of news from the East, where stories of courage, tradition, and resilience unfold.
March for Remembrance: Syriac Genocide
A powerful march took place in Aleppo on Tuesday, June 18, as 350 Syrian Christian scouts honored the victims of the Syriac genocide. Led by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch, His Beatitude Mar Ignatius Aphrem II, the march served as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that occurred between 1915 and 1918, resulting in the loss of over 500,000 lives. The scars of this genocide continue to shape the Syriac communities, fueling a quest for recognition and justice.
Blessings of Ordination in the East
The East witnessed multiple ordination ceremonies recently, signifying a new chapter in the lives of faithful individuals. From the ordination of seven deacons by His Beatitude Cardinal Pizzaballa in Jerusalem to the priestly ordination of Basel Baransi in Nazareth, these sacred rituals symbolize a deep-rooted spiritual journey. The East also celebrated the ordination of Edmond Narsi as a deacon by Mar Gewargis III Younan in Paris, showcasing the diverse tapestry of vocations within the Church.
Empowerment through Inauguration: Mar Mattai Quarry
In Iraq, a beacon of hope shines with the inauguration of the Mar Mattai stone quarry. Nestled within the Syriac Orthodox Monastery of Mar Mattai, this quarry represents a new chapter in the region’s economic landscape. With support from the Ĺ’uvre d’Orient and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this project not only aids in post-war reconstruction efforts post-Daesh but also provides a sustainable livelihood for the local Christian villages. Through the creation of employment opportunities and preservation of traditional crafts, the quarry stands as a testament to resilience and community empowerment.
