Empowering Individuals with Disabilities: Cardinal Pietro Parolin Addresses the 4th International Safeguarding Conference
Cardinal Pietro Parolin recently took the stage at the 4th International Safeguarding Conference, held at the prestigious Gregorian University in Rome. This annual event, organized by the Institute of Anthropology, focuses on preventing and protecting against abuse in the Catholic Church.
Addressing a room full of experts, both lay and consecrated, the Vatican Secretary of State emphasized the prevalence of abuse across all communities, affecting individuals with and without disabilities. Cardinal Parolin highlighted the significant vulnerability of individuals with disabilities, urging attendees to come together to combat all forms of abuse.
Recognizing the Rights of Vulnerable Individuals
Statistics show that 16% of the global population lives with a significant disability, facing immense challenges in their daily lives. The conference’s theme, “Safeguarding and Disability,” seeks to address these vulnerabilities head-on, providing a platform for discussion, education, and collaboration.
Cardinal Parolin emphasized the need for a fairer and more inclusive society, one that recognizes and upholds the rights of all individuals, especially those with disabilities. He praised the progress made in recent years but stressed the importance of global awareness and action.
Creating a Supportive Environment
The conference featured various sessions, including the participation of the Deaf Catholic Youth Initiative for the Americas (DCYIA), dedicated to supporting deaf youth in the Americas. With the assistance of sign language interpreters, participants engaged in discussions on cultural approaches to disability, inclusion in the Church, and recognizing and reporting abuses.
By creating a space for training and networking, the conference aims to equip Church leaders with the tools to address abuse and violence against individuals with disabilities effectively. It also serves as a platform for sharing best practices in care, prevention, and intervention for vulnerable populations.
As we work together to safeguard the most vulnerable among us, let us strive to create a world where all individuals, regardless of ability, are empowered and protected.
