July is not only hot in terms of weather but also in terms of tourism. According to the forecasts from the Demoskopika Institute, published in advance by ANSA, there is an increase in tourist flows in Italy: a whopping 18.2 million arrivals and 75.6 million overnight stays, with a growth of 1.5% and 1.0% respectively compared to the same period in 2023. Foreign tourists are on the rise: just under 10 million (+3.6%), accounting for 54.8% of the total expected arrivals with 38.8 million overnight stays (+2.0%). The tourist spending is expected to reach 17.9 billion euros, a 3.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
According to the “Tourism Forecast Summer July 2024” from the Demoskopika Institute, which estimated the main tourist indicators compared to July of last year, there should be an increase of 263 thousand arrivals and 755 thousand overnight stays. Additionally, according to Raffaele Rio, President of Demoskopika, the occurrence of a proactive scenario could have a “bullish” effect on the overall estimates: around 19.3 million arrivals and 78.6 million overnight stays, with an increase compared to the same period in 2023 of 7.2% and 5.0%. There is also expected growth compared to the booming year of 2019: arrivals are projected to increase by 4.8% while overnight stays by 1.3%.
“Our forecasts confirm a growing trend in tourist flows in our country, even in the month of July. It is worth noting that, according to our estimates, July could see the highest level of internationalization since 2010 in terms of both arrivals and overnight stays,” explains Rio. “I still believe in planning as a lever for the qualitative growth of the entire sector. In this direction – Rio announces – we are working to launch Appeal, an innovative think tank primarily aimed at promoting strategic policies for a more conscious strengthening of Italian tourism. An alliance of stakeholders in territorial tourist systems to develop concrete proposals in key areas, including environmental sustainability, innovation, training, international promotion, and institutional structure. A platform of measures, actions, and suggestions – Rio concludes – to promote sustainable and quality tourism development.”
