Welcome everyone to the wrap-up of the first day of the G7 Leaders’ Summit under the Italian Presidency. It has been a dynamic day packed with important discussions and updates. Four working sessions were conducted, focusing on Africa, the crisis in the Middle East, and the situation in Ukraine, with President Zelensky in attendance for one of the sessions.
Amidst these sessions, a side event highlighted the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, a significant project within the G7 aimed at supporting the growth and development of vulnerable nations, particularly in Africa and Asia. The discussions were fruitful and productive, culminating in strong support for Ukraine and a commitment to provide approximately $50 billion in additional financial aid by the end of the year through innovative funding mechanisms.
The day also saw unanimous backing for the United States’ mediation proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and increased humanitarian aid to the civilian population. The Italian Presidency’s focus on Africa was evident, with support for the Mattei Plan and a commitment to collaborate with African nations for mutual growth and development.
Exciting new developments were announced, including Italy’s participation in the ‘Lobito Corridor’ project and the establishment of financial instruments at the African Development Bank to support investment strategies in alignment with the Mattei Plan. The engagement of the private sector and multilateral development banks underscored the commitment to tangible actions and outcomes.
The day ended on a high note with a spectacular display by the parachutists of the Italian Army’s ‘Folgore’ Brigade. Tomorrow holds more promise and historical significance as we welcome the Holy Father to the Summit. Discussions will span diverse topics like artificial intelligence, economic security, and the Indo-Pacific, reaffirming the commitment to global cooperation and resilience.
As we look forward to another eventful day tomorrow, I invite you to stay tuned for more updates and insights from the Summit. Thank you for joining us, and I hope you have a wonderful evening.
