Prior to the second session of the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod scheduled for October 2024, hundreds of parish priests from various parts of the world gathered near Rome in early May. Among them was Fr. Cletus Mwiila, a Zambian priest, who shared his insights on the future of the Church with Vatican News.
Reflecting on the renewed missionary path initiated by the Second Vatican Council, Fr. Cletus highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the Church. In response to these challenges, Pope Francis launched the Synod on Synodality in 2021, aiming to create a more participatory and inclusive Church.
Fr. Cletus, a staunch supporter of the Church’s move towards synodality, is committed to advocating for a collaborative approach within the Church.
Embracing Listening and Inclusivity
Fr. Cletus described the current momentum towards synodality as a “wind of change,” calling for a Church that prioritizes listening, humility, and inclusivity. He emphasized the need to revamp priestly and religious formation to instill these values effectively.
In the modern era of evangelization, Fr. Cletus stressed the importance of integrating media training into the education of priests and religious personnel, recognizing the pivotal role of media in spreading the Gospel.
A ‘Hotel for Saints and a Hospital for Sinners’
Fr. Cletus challenged the tradition of imposing fees for Church services like sacraments and votive Masses, advocating for a more compassionate approach that welcomes all, regardless of their financial capabilities. He envisions a Church that embraces those who have strayed, offering them acceptance and a path back to faith.
Walking Together and Leaving No One Behind
According to Fr. Cletus, a synodal Church embodies the concept of “walking together,” where every voice, especially those on the margins of society, is heard and valued in the decision-making process. The goal of the Synod on Synodality is to foster ecclesial discernment, ensuring that the Church moves forward collectively.
A Shared Responsibility
In conclusion, Fr. Cletus expressed hope that the Synod would bring to fruition Pope Francis’ vision of a synodal Church as a “field hospital for the soul.” Through embracing synodality, the Church can unite in its mission, ensuring that no one is left behind.
“The winds of synodality are already blowing,” Fr. Cletus remarked. “It is time for us to rise and join the Church in listening, working together, and caring for one another.”
