Exploring the Legacy of Cardinal Celso Costantini – A Bridge Between East and West
The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, is set to unveil a new book shedding light on the remarkable life of Cardinal Celso Costantini, the first Apostolic Delegate to China. The event will take place at the prestigious Pontifical Urban University in Rome on 20 June.
Edited by the acclaimed Italian historian, Msgr. Bruno Fabio Pighin, the book titled ‘Cardinal Celso Costantini and China – Constructor of a ‘bridge’ between the East and West,’ delves into the pivotal role played by Cardinal Costantini in fostering meaningful connections between the East and West.
Joining Cardinal Parolin at the presentation will be key figures such as Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu and Bishop Juan Ignacio Arrieta, who will offer valuable insights into the life and work of Cardinal Costantini. Bishop Giuseppe Pellegrini and Professor Vincenzo Buonomo will also share their thoughts on the legacy of this influential figure.
A Legacy of Passion and Vision
Cardinal Costantini’s unwavering dedication to spreading the Gospel in China, despite facing numerous challenges, remains a testament to his profound commitment to bridging cultural divides. His efforts led to the establishment of the Concilium Sinense, a groundbreaking Synod that sought to harmonize Christianity with Chinese traditions.
Notably, Cardinal Costantini also founded the first Chinese religious institute, the Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord, which has since expanded its presence across Asia. His instrumental role in the creation of the Fu Jen Catholic University further solidified his legacy as a visionary leader.
Following his time in Asia, Cardinal Costantini continued to serve the Church diligently, holding key positions within the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and later serving as the Rector of the Pontifical Urban University.
Join us on 20 June at the Pontifical Urban University as we celebrate the enduring legacy of Cardinal Celso Costantini and honor his role as a bridge-builder between different worlds.
