Discover the Hidden Gem of Lake Bolsena: Isola Bisentina.
Experience a piece of ancient history as Isola Bisentina, a charming privately-owned island nestled in the heart of Lake Bolsena in central Italy, welcomes visitors once again in 2024. This delightful island will be open for guided tours on select dates from 21 June to 3 November.
For years, Isola Bisentina remained inaccessible to the general public until it opened its gates to visitors two years ago after undergoing extensive renovations.
Steeped in rich history dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, this tiny island has served as a sanctuary for popes, nobility, and religious orders over the centuries. From providing refuge from invaders to being owned by powerful dynasties like the Farnese family, Isola Bisentina holds countless tales within its walls.
With its seven chapels, including the illustrious octagonal chapel of S. Caterina attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the island became a renowned pilgrimage site during the Renaissance era.
Owned by the Rovati family, Isola Bisentina has witnessed major restoration works in recent years, preserving its enchanting charm and heritage. This summer, visitors can once again explore the island’s mysteries, chapels, and lush gardens.
A special highlight this year is an exhibition dedicated to Giulia Farnese, an Italian noblewoman with a fascinating history, commemorating the 500th anniversary of her passing. Additionally, contemporary art installations will adorn the island, blending history with modern creativity.
Isola Bisentina is a sacred place, and all visitors are urged to respect the island’s rules and etiquettes. Proper attire and footwear for exploring the wild nature are recommended, along with a bottle of water to stay refreshed.
To reach the island, a private boat service is available from Capodimonte and Bolsena on select dates with fixed timetables. The guided tour around the island costs €25 for adults and €15 for children aged six to 15. Please note that the ticket fee does not cover the transport service, which is operated by a private company.
Situated just an hour and a half drive north of Rome, Lake Bolsena offers a tranquil escape brimming with history and natural beauty. For detailed information on how to reach Bolsena and plan your visit to Isola Bisentina, visit the Isola Bisentina website.
