Welcome to our latest blog post on the ongoing war in Sudan. In its fourteenth month, the conflict shows no signs of slowing down, with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire. International observers and humanitarian actors are calling for urgent action to protect those most at risk.
Reports indicate that the fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 15,000 men, women, and children. Over 9 million people have been displaced, with 8 million within the nation and over a million seeking refuge in Chad and South Sudan.
An estimated 25 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, yet aid deliveries are being blocked in some regions. Aid workers on the ground, including doctors from organizations like MSF, are pleading for the protection of civilians and medical staff. They report targeted attacks on civil infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, and a shocking level of brutality towards innocent civilians.
Violations against children
UN envoy Virginia Gamba expressed deep concern for the plight of children in conflict-ridden Sudan. The escalation of violence has led to appalling violations against young ones, including killing, maiming, rape, and attacks on schools and hospitals.
Leaders of the G7 industrialized nations have also highlighted the deteriorating situation in Sudan, urging external actors to cease supporting the conflict. The impact on civilians is severe, with increased casualties reported.
Hunger
As if the conflict wasn’t devastating enough, millions of Sudanese are now facing starvation due to the war’s impact on the economy. The RSF’s control over agricultural regions like Gezira state has further exacerbated the food crisis, with reports suggesting that millions could die from starvation by September.
