Welcome to the latest news from the G7 summit in southern Italy, where Pope Francis made history by becoming the first Pope to address world leaders gathered. Not only did he deliver a powerful speech, but he also engaged in one-on-one meetings with several prominent figures, including the leaders of the US, Ukraine, India, Kenya, France, Turkey, Canada, and Brazil.
Before his speech, Pope Francis met with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, as well as with the Presidents and Prime Ministers of Ukraine, France, and Canada. Following his address, he listened to interventions from other leaders and held discussions with the President of Kenya, the Prime Minister of India, the US President, and the Presidents of Brazil and Turkey.
The theme of the G7 summit revolves around Africa and economic development, with discussions also touching on the conflict in the Middle East and migration concerns.
Why was the Pope invited to the G7?
Although the Holy See is not a formal member of the G7, Pope Francis received a special invitation from Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to participate in the summit. His presence was part of an “Outreach” session, which allowed non-G7 members to share their insights and perspectives.
