Another Priest Kidnapped in Nigeria: A Call for Action
Reports of the kidnapping of Father Gabriel Ukeh have sent shockwaves throughout the northwestern Nigerian state of Kaduna. The Vicar General of the Diocese of Kafanchan, Fr Emmanuel Kazah Faweh, has spoken out against this heinous act, calling for the safe return of the priest.
“We condemn the incessant kidnappings for ransom of innocent and defenseless citizens of our parishes,” Fr Faweh stated. The abduction took place in the early hours of Sunday, 9 June, when armed men broke into the rectory of St Thomas Church.
A Country in Crisis
Nigeria has been plagued by a security crisis, with over 4,000 kidnappings reported since May 2023. The Vatican has expressed solidarity with the Nigerian people in the face of these atrocities.
Urgent Appeal for Action
Fr Faweh has called on the government to step up security measures ahead of the upcoming Islamic feast of Eid al-Adha, which will be observed from June 15-19. He also urged Nigerians not to resort to vigilante justice, emphasizing the importance of using legal means to ensure Father Ukeh’s safe return.
As the community rallies together in prayer, Fr Faweh invoked the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the swift release of all those held captive. Let us stand in solidarity with our Nigerian brothers and sisters, calling for an end to the cycle of violence and a return to peace.
