The Holy See’s Diplomats: Training Ground for Future Leaders
Recently, Pope Francis had a special meeting with thirty-five students from the prestigious Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, a renowned institution that has been shaping the future diplomats of the Holy See for over three centuries.
As Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the President of the Academy, introduced the community, he highlighted the fourteen students who are preparing to embark on their Missionary Year after completing their academic courses.
The Pope emphasized the importance of this mission, stressing the need for future diplomats to be close to the People of God, especially in distant mission lands. This approach not only rekindles the students’ pastoral hearts but also serves as a powerful antidote to spiritual worldliness, a challenge often faced in diplomatic service.
He then recommended the apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi by Saint Paul VI as essential reading for all students, especially those embarking on missions.
Key Traits of a Diplomat
During the discussion, Pope Francis shared insights on the qualities of a diplomat representing the Church globally. Beyond the essential trait of closeness to the people, he highlighted the need for cunning, piety, and a profound relationship with the Lord in navigating the complexities of diplomatic service.
Navigating a World in Conflict
The Pope also addressed the current global context, referring to the ongoing conflict often described as a “world war fought piecemeal,” including in Europe. He commended the efforts of Apostolic Nuncios in conflict zones working to promote dialogue and uphold humanitarian principles.
Additionally, he underscored the importance of cultivating necessary skills during their training years in Rome to prepare future pontifical diplomats for their roles effectively.
On the occasion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Solemnity, Pope Francis encouraged the students to embody forgiveness and mercy in their pastoral roles, ultimately becoming compassionate and merciful leaders as Apostolic Nuncios.
As the meeting concluded, the Pope offered blessings to each student individually, emphasizing the significance of prayer and guidance in their journey ahead.
Overall, the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy serves as a training ground for future leaders, shaping diplomats who will represent the Holy See with wisdom, tact, and compassion in a world yearning for peace and understanding.
