Every year on 3 June, a remarkable event takes place at the Namugongo Catholic Martyrs Shrine in Kampala, Uganda. Pilgrims from all over the world gather to honor the Uganda Martyrs, who were killed between 1885 and 1887 for their unwavering faith.
This year, thousands of pilgrims flocked to the shrine from the 19 Catholic dioceses of Uganda, as well as from countries across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Some traveled long distances, showing their dedication to commemorating the 22 Catholic martyrs.
Under the theme “But as for me and My Household, We Shall Serve the Lord,” Nebbi Catholic Diocese led the national liturgy for Martyrs Day. Archbishop Raphael p’Mony Wokorach MCCJ presided over the Eucharistic celebration, emphasizing the significance of the martyrs’ sacrifice.
Archbishop Wokorach described Martyrs Day as a new Pentecost, where people from diverse backgrounds come together in prayer and unity. He urged pilgrims to follow the martyrs’ example of unwavering faith and encouraged leaders to combat corruption in Ugandan society.
As the celebration marked the 60th anniversary of the Ugandan Martyrs’ canonization, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other dignitaries joined in honoring the martyrs’ legacy. The event served as a reminder of the enduring impact of faith and sacrifice.
